The analytics tooling market has fractured into three worlds that barely talk to each other. There's the legacy BI layer — Tableau, Power BI, licenses that cost $840/year per seat — built for the data team. There's the modern data stack — dbt, Snowflake, Hex, Mode — built for the data engineer. And there's a growing category of AI-native tools that let a founder or ops manager type a question and get a chart back in under 30 seconds, no SQL required.

None of these worlds are wrong. They're just solving different problems for different people. This page maps the landscape clearly: what augmented analytics actually means, when embedded analytics is worth the engineering effort, how the big data stack fits together, and what to pick based on how many people on your team write SQL. What "modern analytics" actually means

Ten years ago, analytics lived in a BI department. You submitted a data request, someone wrote a query, you got a PowerPoint three days later. The bottleneck was access — access to the data, access to the tools, access to someone who could use them.

What changed isn't the data. It's the access model. Three shifts happened more or less simultaneously:

Machine learning models can now generate SQL from plain English, surface anomalies without being asked, and cluster users into segments you didn't know to look for. That's augmented analytics — and it's why the category matters.

Augmented analytics — what it is and how it differs from traditional BI

Traditional BI is reactive. You know the question, you build the chart, you answer it. A report exists because someone decided to build it. If you want to know something new, you build a new report or submit a new request.

Augmented analytics adds three capabilities that traditional BI doesn't have:

**Natural language queries.** Type 'which customer segments dropped in retention last quarter' and get back a chart — without writing SQL, without knowing the column names, without opening a query editor. The system translates the intent into a query.

Augmented analytics won't replace a dedicated data team for anything that requires custom logic, regulated reporting, or tightly governed pipelines. If you're at a company with 5+ data engineers, augmented analytics is a complement — it frees the team from repetitive ad-hoc requests, not a replacement for the infrastructure they run.

Embedded analytics — when it makes sense and when it doesn't

Embedded analytics means baking dashboards directly into a product that isn't itself an analytics product. Your SaaS customer logs in and sees their own usage data, revenue trends, or operational metrics — rendered inside your UI, not in a separate BI tool they have to log into separately.

The business case is real: products with embedded analytics report higher retention and expansion revenue because customers see the value of the product in the product itself. Amplitude, Mixpanel, and Stripe all embed reporting as core features, not add-ons.

The engineering cost is also real. Building a solid embedded analytics layer requires:

- A data pipeline that pushes customer-scoped data to the warehouse (or computes it on-the-fly) - A multi-tenant security model (customer A cannot see customer B's data) - A charting library or analytics SDK that renders inside your frontend - Performance guarantees — dashboards that take 8 seconds to load kill the product experience

For a Series A SaaS with a dedicated backend team, embedded analytics is worth the investment. For a bootstrapped product at $15k MRR, it probably isn't — not yet. The faster path is giving customers a CSV export and telling them to upload it to AnalityQa or Google Sheets. How to choose your analytics stack — a pragmatic guide by team size

    Solo founder or team of 1–3

    Your data is probably in CSVs, Google Sheets, or a single Postgres database. You don't need a warehouse yet.
